Making Creativity Profitable: When Your Work Is Used Without Permission

May 1, 2025

While imitation may be a sincere form of flattery, unauthorized use of your creative work can diminish, even destroy, its value. For works protected by copyright, the law grants you exclusive rights over its display, distribution, and duplication—but what happens when someone else uses it without permission?

The Oregon VLA is hosting a free, virtual workshop on May 1st at noon PDT to discuss what you can and should do.

This workshop will explore a range of legal and business options for protecting and profiting from your creativity, including:
- How to respond when someone uses your work without authorization
- Choosing the right approach—legal enforcement, licensing, or other strategies
- The costs, benefits, and risks of different enforcement methods
- Proactive steps to strengthen your rights and maximize your work’s value, even in cases of unauthorized use.
